Album Name: Gulf Coast Rebuilding Return to Albums
Album Date: Oct 26, 2007
Description: Three club members joined Rebuilding Together's "Rebuild 1000" in 2007 and traveled to Gulfport, Mississippi, to help rebuild after Katrina. They worked on one of six houses that over 100 volunteers painted, plastered, puttied and made move-in ready. Earlier, Rotarian Marty Helman volunteered in a New Orleans suburb, and came back to raise money to rebuild a soup kitchen in Slidell, Louisiana.

This picture was taken less than two blocks from the gulf. As in many areas, block after block of homes were totally demolished. This lot has electricity and a FEMA trailer and the owners will likely rebuild. More than one-half of the homes in the area of Gulfport we worked in have seen no activity since the storms. This is because the family has left and is not coming back, because insurance money has not been paid yet or because they had no insurance. This is typical of a home that has been severely damaged but was not washed away. This is the property that our team worked on. During Katrina the water rose to a level of 5 feet above the first floor. By the time we arrived it had been gutted and re-wired. In addition to interior work we completed a great deal of yard work. This picture was taken near the end of our week's work. The family in our home was living in a FEMA trailer. They consisted of two parents, two teenage daughters and one 10 year old son. They had added a tarp to the trailer that served as a porch.
Boothbay Harbor Rotarian Vic prepares for the first step which is preparing the bare walls for drywall and insulating all exterior walls. Boothbay Harbor Rotarian Foster (on the left) dives into the drywall task. Chris is a contractor from Gloucester, MA. He paid to have his entire crew come to Mississippi. Chris was the supervisor on our job. In this picture he is posing with the woman who lives in the house. The wall with the windows in it needed to be completely removed because the frame was rotted. Foster is getting ready to begin that task. Most rooms in the house were refinished with drywall. However, this room (the living room) we decided to panel. Vic is working with another team member to make sure the piece they have just measured and cut is a perfect fit.
Skip, the third member of the Boothbay Harbor Rotary contingent, works on the window removal project. A bit different that making cabinetry, isn't it, Skip? The Boothbay Harbor team poses with a few new friends. Note the lovely new paneling in the background. Another photo of the dynamic Boothbay Harbor trio and new friend, hard at work. This is a picture of one-half of Chris' entire team at the end of another long day. We are meeting in the team clubhouse (Clyde's) to review the day's progress and make plans for tomorrow. Two miles inland, and two years after the storm, the damage is incalculable.
What the well dressed Katrina volunteer wears. The Mt. Olive Soup Kitchen in Slidell, Louisiana was totally destroyed by the storm. Ground is broken on a new soup kitchen. Boothbay Harbor is one of many Rotary clubs that helped to rebuild Slidell District Governor Milton thanks Marty and Frank for the efforts of the Boothbay Harbor Rotary club and so many other clubs.
