As I am sure you are all aware, our state has experienced an incredible tragedy in the mass shootings in Lewiston last night. Our hearts go out to all of the families and individuals affected by this horrific act, as well as all Mainers--this event has certainly shaken our entire state. Maine is truly one big small town, and I know this affects each of us. As a place known as one of the safest in the nation, this has altered the sense of security many of us have.
Due to this on-going situation, like many other organizations in the state today, we have decided to postpone our Halloween party for this evening and cancel our meeting. We will be rescheduling this event and will share details when we have them. While we are in this difficult time, we still hope to welcome our young friends in Interact to a gathering with us, hopefully providing a sense of community, connection, and a bit of normalcy for these students. All will be welcome to join, as before.
Please hold each other close today. Our Rotarian friends are always here in community, so please utilize your support systems to connect as we all grieve for the families, Lewiston, and the entire state of Maine. I would also like to share NAMI Maine's crisis hotline, where there are trained counselors for those who need it. The number is 888-568-1112, and is a 24/7 resource for those in need. Please share it with anyone who could use some extra support at this time.
The best thing about where we live is the group of people with whom we share this place. I am confident that we as a state, a community, and a club will rise to this occasion, no matter how heavy, and will be there for each other in all of the ways we are so good at. Please don't hesitate to reach out if you have any thoughts, concerns, or even just want to connect. We are all here for each other.
Thank you everyone.
