Preparing Local Coastal Seafood

By Irene Fowle

Last Thursday was a very delicious meeting, as we welcomed Jenny Shea Rawn, MS, MPH. Rd and her delightful daughter, Lexi.  Jenny is a Registered Dietician Nutritionist, but most importantly, she loves seafood, really loves seafood.  Even as a very young child when asked what special meal she wanted.  It was always some kind of seafood.  She wanted to share her passion for seafood, so started a Blog, then was asked if she could create a seafood cookbook.  Jenny told us the story of how this request developed into her fabulous cookbook, “Coastal Kitchen”.  It’s a complicated process especially if the author, Jenny Shea Rawn, decides to also be the photographer, recipe creator and taste tester while also including the story of the people and processes that bring delicious seafood to our tables.  She involved her young family as much as possible in the process.  Now her daughter, Lexi, has a Kid's Cookbook that will be published within a year.  Jenny's cookbook is fun to read and a visual masterpiece.  The subtitle is “Nourishing Seafood Recipes for Everyday Cooking”.  I can't wait to try them out.

Did I say delicious…that's because our fabulous chef Ivan made several recipes from “Coastal Kitchen” including a delicious fish entree and a New England fall favorite, roasted brussel sprouts.

This week is the Annual Veterans Dinner, co-hosted by the Rotary High School Interact Club and the Boothbay Harbor Rotary Club.  We will welcome almost forty veterans, active duty members and their guests for dinner, friendship and a chance to really say “Thank For Your Service”.  It's a fun, somewhat chaotic but deeply meaningful night.  The Interact Club members will be our servers, but we still need some Rotarians to help too.

We also need help moving tables and chairs and decorating.  Rotary members, please join us at the Clubhouse at 3:00 Thursday to get the hall ready for our guests.  We are planning to seat around 80 people, so we need to move every table and chair we own.  Remember, many hands make light work.  (Is that part of the Four Way Test)???

Then the following week we make 140 Christmas Goody bags for the kids at the Food Pantry and Food For Thought.  We also assemble some basic food stuff and cleaning supplies in a tote for a Homeless Veteran moving into a VETS trailer.  A welcome home package.  It's always a fun night.

Then, we're off the next week to celebrate Thanksgiving with families or friends.

But, through all this, The Big, Gray Rotary Barn is still open every Saturday from 8:30 to 11:00.  It's still full of fabulous furniture, collectibles, art, rugs, yes many rugs.  Hope to see you there.  The money raised by your donations and purchases at the Rotary Club Barn support programs like the Veterans Dinner and Welcome Home tote bags for Homeless Veterans and Christmas Goody Bags for the kids at the Food Pantry.  Thank you for your support.
