Spring has Sprung

The weather cooperated last Thursday and we were able to use our deck during our social hour for the first time this year. Only a few brave souls ventured out but it was a good harbinger of things to come. Another sign of warmer weather is the beginning arrival of our summer members. Great to see everyone!

Camp CaPella Talk

Last week we welcomed Melanie Dresser, Executive Director of Camp CaPella in Dedham, Maine. Camp CaPella is a lakeside camp that offers recreational and educational opportunities for individuals with disabilities. They attract from a wide area, including the Boothbay peninsula. Melanie gave a riveting, passionate presentation describing the positive impact the camp had on the individuals it served.

Update on Food Security

Cathy Fisher provided the Club with an update on the happenings in the Boothbay Region around Food Security. Rotarians including Vic Taylor, Cathy Fisher, Margi Spratt, John Welsh, and Judi White have been collaborating with the Community Resource Council (CRC) to access unmet needs and identify gaps in the food security network.

These efforts included an in-depth series of interviews supported by Rotary funds and conducted by the CRC staff during 2021. Margi Spratt and Cathy Fisher reviewed the findings and prepared a summary report. The findings were presented on January 24th to a community wide ZOOM gathering of individuals representing a wide array of food programs in our region. The goal was to kick off a discussion of how to best collaborate across organizations and fill the gaps.

Out of this grew the convening of the Boothbay Food Security Council hosted monthly by the CRC and open to all organizations working on Food Security. The Council includes forty representatives from churches, schools, food pantries, volunteer/community organizations, health services, feeding programs and community advocacy/outreach groups. This collaboration is resulting in sharing of resources, volunteers, and identification of gaps in services. Rotarians Vic Taylor, Cathy Fisher, and Judi White are currently participating on the Council.

At the April meeting there was discussion of some unmet needs and included the idea that the Rotary might use some of their volunteer capacity to distribute fresh produce during the summer from the Lincoln County Gleaners https://www.healthylincolncounty.org/lincoln-county-gleaners.php to four apartment complexes in the are area that serve families, seniors and disabled. Our Rotarian reps to the Council are in the process of considering how best to organize, rotating distribution so that each complex receives a distribution once a month. This is an early call out that we will be looking for volunteers to assist with these efforts!
