Big News!!!

Join Us this Thursday April 4/22 at 6PM at our “Zoom” meeting for Big News!!  At the last Board of Directors meeting we voted to go ahead with a big project that’s been on the back burner for too long.  Come hear about it and see the plans.  You’ll be amazed, and we hope, as pleased as we are.  That’s not the only news!  We might not be using the clubhouse right now, but we will again.  We’ve made a big and wonderful change there too.

Talking about big plans, Mike Thompson has the building permit for the barn addition.  Our club is so fortunate to have the skills, energy, foresight and humor to have built the clubhouse and the big grey barn.  This addition will give more room to display and store furniture and collectibles.  This barn addition is being funded through donations.  A big thank you to all the donors who are making this possible.  We are still accepting donations for this project. There are many ways to live the Rotary motto “People of Action”, selling furniture, doing pick ups, building buildings, selling onions, making soup, monetary support: these are all part of the fun and mission of the Boothbay Harbor Rotary Club.

The Big Grey Rotary Barn is now open every Saturday 8:30-11:00.  So come volunteer and come shop  It’s a lot of fun visiting with friends old and new.  Even last Saturday when it was cold and snowy we had a nice group of shoppers and Rotarians to visit with.  People love our barn and few leave without a purchase, which allows us to continue our support of local and International programs like Rebuilding Together, the High School Library, the Interact Club Hike-a-Thon and so many more.   Masks are required.

Onions! Onions!  Doug Harley needs all your onion orders this week.  Remember a 25lb box is $28.00.  iron361@roadrunner.com

We have received over 4000 face masks from Rotary District 7780 as part of the Rotary Foundation Million Mask Challenge.  We have distributed them to Boothbay Region Ambulance Service, Our local School District, AOS98, Boothbay YMCA, Boothbay Memorial Library and The Boothbay Railway Village.  We all wish we no longer needed them, but all these organizations were glad to have extras on hand.

David Patch was our speaker last week.  He is an extraordinary person with so much energy and dedication.  He truly makes the world a better place.  He is the Commander of our local American Legion, but last Thursday he spoke to us about another passion of his - Maine Adaptive Sports.  This program is state wide and offers year round adaptive recreation programs for Mainers with disabilities, everything from skiing in the winter to kayaking in the summer.  David said “There is a place and a sport for everyone”.  There are currently over 250 participants state wide.  He encouraged anyone with disabilities to participate.  OH!, and the American Legion Breakfasts have resumed, but every other week, not weekly as I reported.

Vic Taylor reports the “Appreciative Inquiry” program about local Food Security is now complete.  Thank you Margi Spratt and Cathy Fisher for completing those interviews.  This survey will help us target our Food Security programs more effectively.

Congratulations to Judi White our new Food Security Committee Co-Chair.  We have delivered over 700 pints of delicious soup to the Boothbay Food Pantry this winter thanks to her planning and work.  Judi is also our Rotary Foundation Chairperson.  Our goal this year is to donate $10,000 to the Rotary Foundation.  We will need each member's support to achieve this goal.  The Rotary Foundation transforms your gifts into projects that change lives close to home and around the world.  Our club currently has a local project partnering with the Boothbay Food Pantry and a International project building a sanitation block in a town in Uganda supported through the Rotary Foundation.  So, you can see, your donation goes a long way.

Hope to see you on “Zoom” this Thursday.  There are big and exciting things happening.  We want to share it with all our members.

Irene
